NHRCB Chairman attends Round Table Discussion on Establishing Retired People’s Association in Bangladesh

On 24 September 2016, NHRCB Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque attended a Round Table discussion organized by Daffodil International University on “Roadmap of Establishing Expert Retired People’s Association in Bangladesh” as the Chief Guest. The discussion focused on establishing a common forum for the veteran and Knowledgeable senior citizens of our country. The purpose of this forum would be to build platform where their knowledge, experience and expertise can be utilized in a better way and so that they can get social recognition out of it.

In his speech, Kazi Reazul Hoque, Chairman, NHRCB said, “Elderly people are in no way liabilities to society and rather ‘our assets’ as they carry the experience of the past and share it with the new generation. The initiative to establish a common forum of senior citizens is new concept and is very relevant in the present context when in Bangladesh several initiatives are taken by the government to protect the rights of older persons.”

“Bangladesh has enacted the Parents Maintenance Act and has a wonderful national policy for elderly persons that covers everything (aspects) but what we need to do is to disseminate and enforce them . . . most importantly we had a social value towards the elderly people which we now need to revive. Values and norms of the society teach the young generation that senior citizens can contribute a lot. Besides, senior citizens are getting old-age allowance which makes them empowered.” he added.

In this discussion, Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, Former President, FBCCI and Chairman, Standard Bank Ltd. was present as the Special Guest and Mr. Khatib Abdul Zahid Mukul, Founder Chairman, Givency Group was present as the Guest of Honor. Mr. Sobur Khan, Chairman, Daffodil International University presided over the discussion.
