Webinar: Women Migrant Workers in COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Embassies

On 10 July 2020 NHRC Chairman attended the Webinar on “Women Migrant Workers in COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Embassies” organized by BNSK. Dr. A K Abdul Momen, MP honorable foreign minister of Bangladesh graced the program as the Chief Guest. NHRC Chairman Nasima Begum ndc joined the web conference as the Guest of Honor. Dr. Bandana Patanaik, Regional Coordinator, GAATW, Ms. Shokoi Ishikawa, Country Representative, UN Women were Special Guests.

Hon’ble Chairman said that the ongoing pandemic has turned our lives into uncertainty and the whole world has become helpless in dealing with it. It has shaken the whole world. Bangladesh is no exception.

She also said that human rights should be at the center of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inclusive measures aimed at protecting the rights and health of the whole population, including all migrants women, regardless of their migration status were urgent and necessary and can contribute to the effectiveness of the general national measures against COVID-19.

She also mentioned by taking the right actions to protect migrant workers now, governments and businesses in the GCC could start to turn the tide on years of abuse. Gulf countries must start to treat migrant workers equally and eliminate all systems that discriminate against them and infringe on their human rights. Bangladesh embassies should continue fruitful negotiation with the host countries so that they become humane to our migrant workers in Covid 19 pandemic. It is also important for all concerned to aware our migrant workers about sanitization for being safe from the Covid 19.
