NHRC condemns sexual violence against two Marma sisters

Media reported that two Marma sisters were sexually abused allegedly by some law enforcement agency members in Bilaichory, Rangamati on 24 January 2018. NHRC took Suo Moto of the case and asked Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati to send a report after conducting the proper investigation by 26 February 2018. NHRC Member Banchita Chakma met the girls at Rangamati Sadar Hospital where they were undergoing treatment. She took their testimony over the incidence.

In the meantime, according to Media honorable high court had directed to hand over the girls to the custody of their father and when their father with the court order went to the hospital to take their custody the Marma sisters refused to go with their father being afraid of their future insecurity. Media also reported that there was an argument between father and daughters in front of Yan Yan, wife of Chama Circle King Debasish Roy and Chief Advisor of Chakma Circle. At last, the Civil Surgeon of the Rangamati Sadar Hospital handed over the girls’ custody to their parents and after that they were traceless.

Commission expressed deep concern about this incidence. NHRC Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque called on a special Commission meeting on 18 February 2018 to discuss the matter and take necessary action.  In the meeting, two decisions were taken. One was forming a 03-member team to submit a report within 07 working days after visiting the spot and taking testimonies of witnesses. The other decision was issuing a notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs to send the report on the incidence of revealing photo and identity of the two victims on SP, Rangamati’s Facebook page.

Kazi Reazul Hoque said that NHRC would take all the necessary actions to bring the perpetrators to justice according to its law.
